Which position should I play?

Question
Nick,
I'm 14, 5'11", and weigh 130 lbs. My tackle isn't very hard, but I can run fast, take hard tackles, and run for a long time. My drop-goal isn't very accurate, but I can kick hard. Which rugby position should I play?

Answer
Hi Andrew,

It sounds like you may be already playing rugby. In this case you probably already know the position you want to play - so play the position you like most. Do not worry about how good you are now. Make a clear decision on the position you like, then set goals and standards and get to work.

Sounds like you may already be playing in the backs probably winger or full back - I can't tell. Work on your weaknesses and maximise your strengths. Drop goals and tackling does take a lot of practice.

For help look on line for coaching DVD's or get a kicking coach. For tackling read some of my old answers on the subject.

To repeat - pick the position you like most and work on skill from that point. At your age expect to change positions at least a couple of times before you are 21 - it is actually a good thing for your overall rugby skill.

Good luck
