Answer
Hi

The best thing to remember is "run through open doors not walls" When practical side step, if a fend is needed to avoid full contact then do that. If you are simply running up a penalty or if your coach has asked for a lot of "pick and go" style play then run it up, commit the opposition player and after giving him a good shoulder shunt either pass off or turn and present the ball to a team mate to strip or go to ground and place the ball for the ruck to drive over you.

Don't over think things, every situation calls for a decision on the spot as to what you need to do with ball. Train hard and practice all your playing skills and then concentrate while on the field.

As for weight training I suggest joining a gym and getting a proper trainer to make you a routine based on your physique and age and current abilities. Work with a good trainer who understands your goals. Generally player do their muscle growth in the off season and strength training during the season to avoid injury. Your trainer should know this so you are not too tired for practice and games.
