Answer
G'day mate,
RE: my answer below what ended up happening with your situation?
Yeah this is a tough one. On the one hand it is great to be in the first team but it sucks to be on the bench.
It is best to schedule time with your coach. Don't just walk up to him out of the blue. Actually set a time to meet face to face. Prepare before you go with some questions. Even have them written down.
Ask directly but politely if there is any chance of making the starting line up and what if anything you can do to achieve that. Focus on what you can do to improve and get better not on the other player. Note down what you need to improve on, ask for specifics and try to get measurable numbers. Don't get into a defensive discussion about your abilities, just note down what he thinks you need to work on. Ask the coach if you can debrief with him after each game in a formal way, this may wake him up to your skills. Ask him to take note of your work on the field during the game.
If he says you will always be on the bench unless there is an injury then weigh that up. Either live with it or ask to be put back in the 2nd team. I suggest talking with the 2nd team coach first to make sure he will put you in his starting line up.
It sucks but I have been there and I learned that sometimes when a coach has made up his mind up it is time to prove him wrong or get away from the guy and enjoy your rugby in another team. Before that make sure you are doing everything you can to be the best player you can by your own standards.
Best of luck
