Question
Hi, i am a 16 year old girl and i have just started to play rugby-i dont know much about how to play yet! I am 5'3 and 71kg meaning i am overweight, which is on of the reasons i started to play. I am not a fan of running, id much preffere a bike ride! but i have strong legs, and i am not afraid to be hit or take some one down.
which position do you think i'd play best at?
and what can i do to lose fat and gain muscle at the gym?
thanks
Answer
Hi Jamie,
Good on you for getting into rugby (any active sport) I would like you to do one thing first. Go to a doctor and get a physical. See if you are over weight when considering your age, height, sex and diet. Get a good bill of health. I worry that you might only think you are overweight when in fact you might be a good solid build that is healthy. OK?
I hate to suggest positions because you should start rugby in a position that you like. I think maybe prop or lock could be good but if you are quick go for number 8 you seem like you are a handy person to have on the field and to like tackling is a good thing to have. Read some of my past questions on tackling it should help your technique.
Do try websites like www.coachingrugby.com and use Google to search for "rugby technique, skills, training etc." you have a wealth of information there.
Also the book "rugby for dummies" is a good starter for a new player.
Try to view as much rugby on TV and at the local sports field as you can. If you are watching your own team play from the sideline really study what is going on, don't be tempted to get into a chat session with team mates.
With regards to the gym, work with a qualified trainer and set goals based on your age, sex and body type. Get a trainer who has had training in all types of gym work and can produce certifications and has a qualification in diet management.
Diet and working out are all different to each person so it might take a bit of time and changing this around to find what works for you.
