my coach has put me as a flanker
Question
my name is dan, the only positions i have ever played are props, uasually loose head, im 5'11, weigh 24 stone, and can run about 7m a second, but my coach has tested my ability to play the other forward positions, and thinks i would be a good flanker! something about that doesnt seem right to me, what do you think
Answer
I think you have a great opportunity to excel in both positions, The loose head prop is considered a real "grinding" position, what I mean is you get yourself into all the hard stuff. Switching to flank will be different as you have to read the game better and faster. The flanker is another back row player (great that the coach thinks your great for the position) he has to follow the ball and support the ball carrier and also look for ways to exploit the opposition. The loose head follows the pack or ball and sets up platforms etc. try the flank position, it will seem weird at first, binding on to the side, but if you can figure to the position and make it your own...you will really enjoy it as it gives you so much more room to run and also gets you involved in the game all the time.
Having both skills is great, it means you can switch if you end up in a team that has a loose head prop or if they have a flanker.
Maybe start reading about the flanker role and maybe watch some stuff on you tube......or even a search on Google.
Have a great day and hope that helps
