Playing Rugby for the first time
Question
Hey, I currently live in Auckland, New Zealand and I am interested in playing Rugby. But the problem is I dont know how to play, what are the positions or processes and whether I am physically capable enough, as it is a very intensive and demanding sport in Aotearoa (NZ). I am 172cm tall and weigh around 70kg, Im 15 and I have a Hypertension condition, What position would be suitable for me in basic conditions, like a beginner? I run just about OK. Is Rugby that rough to play and am I physically suitable in your expertises' perspective??
Answer
Hello Andrew,
I advise talking with your doctor about this and to keep getting bi-weekly check ups as you start to make sure there are no health issues that come along due to your condition.
I then suggest starting out with a summer of playing touch rugby via a local club, church, school or your family and friends. This is a non- contact way of getting the feel of the running game.
When you feel comfortable enough with touch rugby to take the step into ful contact rugby I suggest entering a weight restricted team in your local club or school. That will make sure you are not "playing above your weight" you may end up being one of the bigger guys on a team if the weight grade is a good fit.
Communicate your condition up front and ask a lot of questions. Watch a lot of rugby both professional and teams that have players your size and even the younger player like under 10's to see how other beginners start out.
If you approach a club or school and do not feel that you are getting the kind of feed back you need then speak up and ask for what you want, if it does not come then move on to another club or team .
Welcome to rugby and have fun.
