Fly-half tactics
Question
Hi Nick,
I've been playing fly-half for three years at my university. My inside center is the best runner on the team and is the focal point of our offense. My coach wants me to run a lot of plays tight to 12 and then later in the game fake to him and catch the defense wrong footed and playing it outside. However, I've also been told to read the defense on each possession and run plays based on how they are playing. Which way should I play? Should I play our game regardless of what the defense is doing, or should I play to their defense even if it means not giving the ball to our great 12? Thanks and I hope to hear from you.
Answer
Hi Scott.
I would ask this question to your coach. It is safest to run his game plan as much as possible. If an obvious opportunity arises take it. Make sure your own team are aware you will do this.
Remember a coach will allow your creativity if it is used in a smart "best for the team" manner. If you are just doing what you want to because that is what make you feel better then you are not making decisions in the interests of the team.
Talk with your coach. Let him know that you respect his game plan (it is a good one) but that you want to feel like you have the OK to take advantage of obvious opportunities.
During a game if the coaches game plan is not working take the time in a time out to ask him if you can re-organize a counter plan. Maybe even have it set up before the game.
