Bull Running?
Question
I am on the small side for a rugby player, but I am able to make most of the important tackles and I can run really fast. My question is: Is bull running/charging allowed in rugby? One of the kids on an opposing team would get the ball, lower is shoulder, and run as fast as he could into whoever was in his way, even if a tackler was running in from the side! Is this legal?
Answer
Hi Zach,
Each refery will have their wn interperatation during a game but basically what you describe is not illegal.
As long as the player donesn't fend with a closed fist or raised boot the runner is allowed to drop a shoulder. In fact lining up a player is ok too.
While your description tends to define the act as melicious and the term "bull running" implies poor sportsmanship the reality is that what you describe is legal and can still be made into a opportunity.
When a player over-commits to an action their options are limited. If a player chooses to drop a shoulder and run at you simply allow him to run at you and at the last minute step aside and grab him around the waiste and drop down to bind up his legs. He will go over easily. There is no need for you to get sucked into his game. Just because he wants to play in such a limited way doesn't mean you need to as well.
If he wants to be a bull then you be a matador.
