Patterns of Play
Question
We often hear professional coaches talking about patterns of play, I was wondering what exactly are patterns. I know that there is 'playing the same way' or 'round the corner', but what others are there, how many phases should be planned in each pattern and how many patterns should each team have?
Answer
Hi Eoin,
Patterns are just that - patterns. Take phases for example, you asked how many phases should be planned. Well the answer really should be none. The phases should continue until the forwards of the opposition are committed to the maul/ruck to free up the back line for a better attack.
The point of phases is to suck the opposition into committing to the maul/ruck so your backs have more room to attack. If the opposition forwards refuse to commit then your forwards need to keep the pick and go moving forward or a driving maul until a try is score or the opposition eventually commits its player to the maul.
Patterns are just another way for saying strategy. I beleive you need to go into a game with your own strategy and tactics but be able to adjust them as the game unfolds.
