Flanker Advice etc

Question
I've played rugby for a long while, but I recently joined a team and now I also play for county. The only problem is I've been moved around positions alot and haven't gotten comfortable in one yet enough to master. But I recently got drafted as a flanker, but as I've not settled into it I often find myself 'lost' during matches, to the point where I'm shouting over to the other flanker for instruction. I know it sounds really clueless but:
- What is my main goal in the game?
- What is my main job description?
- What skills are key?
- Any tips?

I'm 18 years old. I've been moved between flanker and wing to give you a insight into my skills set. I have average speed but above agility (my most helpful skill). I'm strongish but trying to work out how to use it.

Think that's about it to be honest.

Cheers
Louise

Answer
Hi Louise,

Which Flanker are you? Openside or blind?

Basically your main goal is to be on the ball - in defense you are hunting the ball carrier and putting the pressure on the half back and #10 at scrum time. On attack you are either running with the ball or in a support position to your team mate carrying the ball.

The key thing is to be making tackles and steeling the ball off the oppostion out of the tackle area. You need to push the off side rule and the break down to steel the ball. A flankers main role is getting and mainting possession.

Key skills/ attributes: fitness, fitness, fitness. The ability to pass and catch well.. The ability to read the game to support team mates with the ball and make takles and stell possession.

See if you can get video footage of pro games and really study what the flankers do.
