Question
I was wondering if you had any tips for an eight. I just started playing the position, moving from flanker, and i have been playing for about half a year. i would greatly appreciate any and all advice you can give involving the position. Also rather than be at the back during a lineout I lift due to my strength. I am from the US and play on the east coast for my high school.
Answer
Hi Nick,
Here is a good formal break down of the position click or paste this link and read...

Basically the #8 is a main forward ball carrier - off the scrum, hitting the ball up and braking the line to off load to support players or set up a maul or ruck.
You need to do a lot of work on defense and be heavily involved around the break down. Like the flankers your task is to support your team mates who have the ball.
Work on your speed, endurance and ball skills (passing and catching as well as chip and pop kicks)
You also have to be ready at the back of the lineout to catch over throws and be a rear jumper.
I sugest using You Tube for skills and position tips and also watch a lot of professional rugby paying close attention to the number 8 even when they are nowhere near the ball. You might miss the game a bit but you will eventually get how the #8 works around the field.
