What determines handedness in hockey (the way a person shoots?)

Ovechkin signs autographs with his right hand and shoots right.
Crosby signs right handed & shoots left.
Nash, signs right & shoots left.
Stamkos, signs right handed & shoots right.

Hi Gene,

There is GENERALLY no one particular thing... as you can see - great players can shoot either way regardless of their dominant sides.   That said - if there is a choice at a young age - it would be to encourage the dominant hand to be at the top of the stick - (if right handed - shoot left!) which is where most of the strength and coordination for stick control comes from...  again this is a general rule too!

- As who can argue against Ovechkin's prowess with the puck!!
