Delay of game penalty
Question
I have been playing hockey for 20 years and had an interesting call made the other night. Championship game, we were up by 1, I was on D, and proceeded to skate behind the net and look for a lane to pass out of the zone when I noticed the other team skating for a change, I figured with 3 minutes in the game I will just hang out behind the net since I wasnt being pressured. Next thing I know I got called for delay of game, because I didn't move the puck, what the heck is that call? I wasnt doing anything but standing there with the puck on the ice, at my stick.. This is a USA hockey rule league, adult league, non checking, etc. I have never heard of this before. You?
Answer
Hi Chuck
Sorry for the delay (LOL!)!
Well there is a penalty for delay of game, but in your case the ref probably should have yelled at you to move the puck and if you didn't, then give you the penalty. If you didn't have the puck and waited around back there it would have been delay too. It's kind of a rare call. I think too b/c it was an important close game they probably thought you were chewing up the clock and you weren't moving your feet.
