crosstraining sports for hockey.
Question
Hi Martial:I have a question about other sports that have the most benefit for hockey players as a second sport.A group of us parents were in a group talking about it most common answers were lacrosse, baseball, football, rollerblading.I mentioned wrestling for its development of tremendous core strength, quickness, toughness, endurance, explosiveness etc.. nobody in group had ever heard/thought of it as a good sport for hockey players to use as crosstraining. What do you think.
Thanks
Answer
Hi Frank...
Absolutely!! Any type of sport or exercise that involves working the "big" muscles and especially the CORES will be of benefit in addition to those bringing in hand eye coordination. THE BIGGEST factor however is that the PLAYER ENJOYS the other sports. There is a direct correlation to ENJOYMENT in an activity and increasing power, speed, strength. You can lift weights all day and run marathons - but if the athlete is NOT enjoying it - there will be NO long term benefit!
So whichever sport you son plays and HE REALLY WANTS TO PLAY FOR THE AS MUCH OF THE FUN OF IT, HE WILL IMPROVE MORE than doing anything else that may even "sound" much much better - if he does not have fun with it!
Hope this makes sense!
Feel free to follow up with any other questions!
Thank You!
And remember - you too as parents - should be having FUN as well!! Hockey is a great GAME!!
Cheers,
