I was just wondering what drills i could do to improve my skills overall (skating, shooting ect.). i'm planning on trying out for the girls high school team but i havent played in 3 or 4 years. I just would like to know some drills i could do to get my skills better.
Answer
Hi Hannah, it takes a lot to improve and the best way to do this is to practice a lot! Studies have proven that it takes about 10 000 repetitions to train your muscles to perform a task efficiently, this means if you want to perfect your wrist shot you will have to take a lot of shots!
Get out there and play hockey as much as you can, look for open ice, public skating, and shinny.
For shooting make sure you know the proper way to shoot. We have a lot of videos and tutorials for shooting at How To Hockey http://howtohockey.com/
For stickhandling you want to control the puck around your entire body, so practice moving the puck front to back and side to side in front of you, on both sides, and as far behind you as you can. You can learn more about that in this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPrYe0-ZX0Y
For stickhandling and shooting you can improve a lot by practicing at home. Pick up a hockey shooting pad and a net so you can practice stickhandling and shooting. Here is a review I did on the roll up shooting pads. http://howtohockey.com/extreme-passing-kit-review
For drills - When you get ice practice your acceleration, stops, crossovers, and skating backwards. I like stop and starts, and the "lightning drill"
Good luck!
