spring hockey
Question
My son is 7 years old and just finished his 1st year novice(3rd year of hockey) and he had an outstanding year. He has been asked to join an 'all star team' to play spring hockey. The team would consist of players from all different teams in our area, and traveling to some big tournaments. We are concerned he is too young to do this, as he will be turning 8 next month. Should we get him to have a break and play some soccer and be a kid, or should we encourage him to do this? We have asked him, and he wants to play because he loves hockey, but he did say his legs are getting tired. If he does spring hockey, he will have 2 months off before he does summer hockey camp in August. Is it too much at too young of an age?
Answer
Hello Rachel!
In my personal opinion - if there are other sports your son would like to play -- then do that! All good hockey players are also good all around athletes. They can have fun and do well in other sports as well.
At this age the focus should be on FUN anyway! So let him choose, and support him in the spirit of FUN! The last thing you want is to burn him out at a young age. Hockey is a great sport we can play well into our senior years... Like anything - if done in moderation it can be awesome for everyone involved! If in his early teens he feels he wants to chase the PRO dream - then you can maybe up the commitment at that time... but until then -- I would keep the focus on your son's preferences for enjoying his experience as a child!
Hope this makes sense!
Good luck!
