Deion Sanders
Question
How many times has Deion Sanders been scored on, as in how many touch downs has he given up during his career? I don't care for him, but a colliege said he sucks and well an arguement started.
Answer
I have no idea, and have no idea how to get the answer - "touchdowns given up" are not an offical NFL stat for DBs.
That being said, no one can say that Deion Sanders "sucked" as a DB and back it up with any statistical information. Over 16 seasons, Sanders has had a total of 1274 INT return yards, placing him second ever in NFL history, and his INT return for TD number ties him for 3rd best in NFL history.
Paul Zimmerman ("Dr. Z" of Sports Illustrated), a football analyst who looks at stats, not highlights to comment on football, placed Sanders along with Jimmy Johnson (SF 49rs DB in the 60's-'70s) on his all-century team as a corner.
The knock on Sanders has been that he wasn't physical - didn't play the kind of smothering, bump and run coverage favored by someone like Dick "Night Train" Lane. Instead he had a downfield coverage game. It worked well - there were whole games were a team wouldn't throw a single pass to his side of the field.
Sanders was one of two dominant DB's during his era (along with Rod Woodson). You could argue about who is the best of all time, but "Sanders sucked" = I don't know anything about football history or statistics. He was one of the top five DB's in NFL history - exactly where he ranked depends on what you value in a DB.
Put it another way: Zimmerman and Peter King have both said they will first ballot select him for the HoF. You don't 1st ballot people who "suck" into the HoF.
