Getting foot in the door
Question
Coach, I am attending college for Sports admin. in the fall. I called a local high school coach to meet with him and get some pointers about a future in coaching or scouting. I have no coaching experience, but I want to ask him if I can perform volunteer work or OJT.
Do you think it is rude to ask him to sit in on his program or eventually work an internship of some sort?
Answer
Dear Joshua Graham,
Welcome to our club. I am always happy to meet a new coach.
Coaching is not easy and it takes time to develop as a coach. Talk to the other coaches, pick their brains. Ask questions, you will find that most coaches are happy to talk about their sport. Books and videos help, but you have to do more if you want to be a good coach.
If I were you, I would talk with the head football coach of the college that you are attending. He can open some doors for you. Being able to say that you were a assistant football coach on the college level, will look good on a resume.
I am going to give you a few words of advice from an old football coach to a new member of the club. Always keep the safety of your football players first. You will sleep better at night. Next, if you feel that you have to cheat to win a game, don't. Over the years, I have found that coaches that cheat lack the basic skills to compete on a level playing field. They know that the only chance they have, to beat you, is to cheat. Work on your basic skills and you will never feel the need to cheat. And every win you get you will know you earned it. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do for you.
Good luck, your friend, Coach Louis.
