Game Plan and Schemes
Question
Sports writers and analysts often use the football terms "game plan" and "scheme". I am fairly knowledgeable on things football, but could you please give a concrete example of what an actual "game plan" would look like/comprise ? Please also give me a definition of a "scheme" and an example of a "scheme". Thank you !

Answer
Dear Bob,
A scheme is an elaborate and systematic plan of action. It is the style of defense or offense that you play week in and week out. For example, one defense might play a 4-3 front, and attack on every down. Another defense might play a 4-3 front, and play a bend but don't break style. They both play a 4-3 fronts, but they approach the game in different ways.
A game plan, are the adjustments that a team makes from week to week, for the next opponent. For example, one week you might be playing a team that has a great quarterback that likes to run with the ball, so you might want your line-man to adjust the way they rush the passer in order to keep the quarterback in the pocket. Their best play might be a sweep to the right, so might want to stack the defense to that side to force them to run the other way. What ever they are good at, you want to take that away from them. If they are a good passing team you want to force them to run. If they like to run, you want to force them to pass and so on.... You get the idea.
I hope I answered your question.
Your friend, Coach Louis.
