Playing with glasses on

Question
Hey!
Im not sure if you are the right person to ask this question or not, but my name is Aaron and I am 15 from Australia.  I am going to start football and I want to play wide reciever as I am fast with a 40 meter dash of about 4.9 seconds on grass (bad quality grass that is).  I am going to join a club and in the future, I am hoping to get into the state team!

I was just wondering if it is possible to play with glasses on?  Like wear them under my helmet?  Is it allowed in the rules and if so, is it practical?  I am unable to wear contacts as they irritate my eyes badly and they fall out all the time.

Answer
Aaron,
Thank you for your question.  I hope you do join the club and get the chance to play American Football, it is a wonderful sport and there are some very good club teams Down Under.  To answer your question YES, you may play with glasses. There are no rules prohibiting it.

From personal experience having played high school and college football, glasses are somewhat practical.  You may find the lens fogging up from heat and sweat.  There are wipes you can buy to prevent lens from fogging up.  SCUBA Dive shops carry this product as well as some optometrists.  If you can't find this there is a home remedy that is a bit smelly but it works.  soak your glasses in vinegar for 2-12 hours.  Then let them dry and play that way.  you WILL SMELL like vinegar.

Do not play with wire or metal rim glasses, they will break and can be dangerous to you.  Find a pair of sturdy plastic rim glasses, advise your doctor what you are looking for and why and he/she should be able to get you a sturdy pair.  You may also want to get an eyeglass band that holds the glasses snuggly to your head (band is elastic and wraps around the back of your head, it connects to each ear piece.) There are glasses on the market called "COMBAT" Glasses or SPORTS glasses, these work very well, but look funny.

Lastly, I went from glasses to contact lens,  I had a very hard time with contacts, but I finally found a pair that worked for me.  I tried nearly 3 dozen different kinds (soft, semi gas permeable, etc.)before I found a pair that works for me.  You should really try this you will be surprised how well you see and the freedom you have playing.

Good luck and if I can be of further assistance please feel free to contact me.
Best of luck,
