Reading an Offense
Question
My question is about reading offense because I am going to play MLB in college and I want to know more about how to read an Offense even thought I have an idea. I would also like to know how to stop the run and know were the run is going as soon as the ball is hiked or before. Also if you know any good book for learning more about linebacking and defense.

Thanks for writing. Unfortunately, there isnt any concrete way to teach this, especially over a website. Reading an offense depends on a lot of factors. First of all, what is the offense you are playing that week? Every offense has different "keys", and learning these keys weekly are important. That is the reason we as football players are encouraged to study film so often. Watching film and studying the opponent is THE ONLY WAY to figure out how to read that offense. For example, lets say you are playing a team that runs a wing-t. While watching film, you realize that on every sweep play, the backside guard pulls playside. After studying the whole film, you realize that the guard only pulls on sweeps or boots (this isnt necessarily true, I am just making up an example). So there is something you have to remember. Do some research into the great LBs. You will find that it wasnt coincedence that they always found themselves near the ball. They studied the opponents, and basically knew what was coming by reading keys in the offense. Also, they picked out tendencies. A lot of coaches have certain things they like to do in certain situations. Maybe a team, when faced with 3rd and over 10 yards, likes to run screens to the short side of the field? Have you ever checked films for this type of thing?
Lastly, the defense you play in makes a big difference. Some defenses will have you assigned to certain responsibilities, and some have you running all over the field. Make sure and know your role. Thats very important. Making a ton of tackles might be great for you, but it also might take you out of position, which hangs a fellow teammate out to dry.
There are tons of books on the net you can order. Just do a google search for Linebacker / instruction / books, and you should find a lot.
Good luck and remember, doing the mental work is what makes a player great. Be sure and let me know how things are progressing!
