Passing Plays

Question
Hi Coach,

Thanks again for your answer on the 3 and 5step drop. I've been practicing it hard and I'm getting better at it, feeling it more!!

I 've also been working on the playbook. All my running plays are done. We have two huge runners ( they played rugby, they are really tough and fast ). Now I'm getting problems with my passing game. I really don't know what routes or conjunction of route to choose. I am going to look at some defense playbooks to really get to know the different defense strategies, but I am very confused!!
First of all, i read for example that you played in a run and shoot offense when you were a starting QB. What does this run and shoot offense thing mean??
I also found a playbook on the internet ( a german team ) and their passing playbook is awkward. For example they say that the X and Z receiver have the same route on every play and that the Y receiver gets his route dependinf on the formation they are using. Isn't that weird?? It doesn't leave much imagination for a passing game...

I know some things about the passing game, like the option thing: when it's a man coverage you have to run off your opponent with a post route for example. When it's zone defense you have to do a hook.
I wanted to ask you if you have some tips for me, so that I can creat my passing playbook, some general guidelines that I could use, a general knowledge of a specific route to use against a specific defense etc.... I don't ask you to give me a passing playbook all done, I want to creat my own, I just need some advice, so it can get clear in my head and then i can work on that.

Thank you very much and good luck with your team and all the questions we ask!!!

Regards
Edvard

Answer
Dear Edvard ,
Welcome fellow football coach. I think that the first time that you wrote the website you spoke to Coach Perl however, I know that I can help you with your question.

I can answer questions about new and old football schemes. The Fly Offense, The Double Wing Offense, The Jet Offense, The Single Wing Offense, The Bunch Attack, Air Raid Offense, Multi-Set Offense, West Coast Offense, Empty Backfield Offense, The No-Huddle Offense, Flip Flop Offense, Double Slot Offense, The Toss Offense, The Air Option Passing Attack, and The I-Formation.

(Run and Shoot) The Run And Shoot offense is a multiple wide receiver sets that is comprised of wide open passing attack. The quarterback will pass 40 to 50 times in a game. Did very well on the college level but fell apart in the NFL. If you want to know more about the run and shoot please let me know. I am just giving you the short version.

Let us get to your question about the passing game. I would like to say that I have read just about every book that has been written on football. And that the best book that covers the passing game is,

"Winning Football With the Air Option Passing Game"
by Homer Rice

It covers everything you will need to add a passing game to your offense. This is a real playbook that works on both the High School and College levels. Take a look at this website.
