Best Football position for me
Question
QUESTION: I'm not sure what's the best position for me, i'd personally like offensive tackle or guard but maybe i need more weight, i'm 15 yrs old, i weight 69 kg (152 pounds) and i'm 5'4'' tall aproximately. I have good percentage of body fat, and muscle. I can also run at average speeds, so i was just wandering what could be the best offensive position for me, i'm not too tall but i'm weighty enough to hold other tackles. As a coach what do you expect from OT or Guards? And how hard is the training?
ANSWER: Dear Rodrigo De Luna,
When I pick my linemen, I want my guards to be able to pull in any direction. And I want my tackles to be able to run over people. Does that sound like what you would like to do? If not, let me know and, maybe we can find a spot for you on defense.

QUESTION: I like tackling, its actually one of the things i enjoy the most. What position at the offensive line requires the most strenght?
ANSWER: Dear Rodrigo De Luna,
The position that requires the most strength is the tackle. The position that requires the most speed is the guards.
Let me ask you a few questions? How much do you bench press? How much do you squat?
And if you like to tackle people, why don't you want to play defense?

QUESTION: I like offense more than defense, but i like defense too, i dont bench press, my physical conditioning coach tells me its not good to start lifting weights so young, he prefers building muscles in normal ways, like push ups, i can do like 10 push ups in a row quickly, holding my whole 154 pounds. I'm considering a lot being on defense as Cornerback, but i need to develop my physical condtition more, or in offense being guard, as they require more speed than strenght. My last question, how tough is the training for the offensive line?, i know its pretty physical and probably a lot more than training for cornerbacks.
Thanks for all your advice
Answer
Dear Rodrigo De Luna,
Not lifting weights is old school thinking. Yes, you can lift weights and no it will not hurt yourself if you do it the right way. What you want to do is lift light weights that way you do not place any strain on you bones or body frame. High reps light weights.
You can also do bar dips and pull ups for your chest and back. This is a great way to build muscles.
Try playing some basketball it is a great sport and it will help you get into football shape. All that running back and forth, and side to side is great. This will help your coordination, quickness, conditioning, and improve your foot work. This type of workout is especially good if you want to play on the line.
You also might want to add handball to your workout schedule. Just like in basketball, handball forces you to run back and forth and side to side. Handball can be of great help, to a football player, for all the same reasons as basketball.
Try playing these two sports, on regular bases, and you will get into fantastic shape. And your foot work will look great.
Let me know if you need any more help. I will be happy to help you in anyway I can.
