How to catch a ball under pressure
Question
I'm a 6'1 184 pound Tight End entering my freshmen year. i need help on catching the ball more often. For example during practice i'm perfectly fine catching the ball but under pressure i can never catch it. I was wondering if there is a way i can find a way to catch a ball while under pressure. So it would be helpful if you can answer back. Thanks
Answer
Tony,
You describe a problem that affects many receivers that result from lack of concentration within the last few moments before completing the catch. Focus is your key. You need to run routes and focus as you run, focus on the ball from the time it is in the air to the time it is in your fingers, continue focusing on grasping the ball, tucking it and running. When you go to sleep at night, spend 10-15 minutes visualizing yourself completing passes under pressure. Visualize it in slow motion and study it in your mind. Then apply it on the field.
I assume your fundamentals are sound: i.e. CATCHING SKILLS. Fingers - spread forming a cone for catching the ball... Arms - place the hands in position to see both the ball and he hands as the catch is made... Eyes - focused on the ball and the hands... Wrists - angle the palms up... Outside Hand - always makes first contact with the ball, turns the ball toward the body preparing for the carry... Opposite Hand - after initial contact, firmly controls the ball and turns the point into the armpit for the run... Passes Even or Above the Numbers. Hands - the thumbs touch, the first fingers are almost together... Passes Below the Numbers or Under the Waist. Hands - the little fingers touch forming a catching pocket... etc. If not then you will need to work on your fundamentals.
May I suggest a video that I have and think is a good tool.
