Football Weigh In Weight Loss
Question
My son is 8 years old and the weight limit is 94 lbs. he is 95.1, we have had him on a healthy lean diet, lots of water, extra exercising plus his practices 3 nights a week....do you have any healthy tips for us that may help ....we have five days left......
Answer
Bridget,
This is a bit out of my expertise with respect to Weight loss. But my expert opinion as to requiring small children [8 year olds] to have weigh ins and to require them to diet and have to do extra exercise to loose 1.1 lbs. is that such a practice by youth football is unsafe and unhealthy and is not within the spirit of the game. I would recommend flag football over weight restricted pop warner football.
I commend you for taking a health approach as there are many parent who might try less than health techniques. I recommend you contact you son's doctor for his advise as he knows your son, this health and his body. Once you son is fully grown and achieves his full height and weight then I would recommend he start worrying about weigh ins but not now as an 8 year old.
If weigh ins were within the spirit of the game then why don't they have weigh ins at the high school, college and professional levels? Trying to match up equally sized youth for safety purposes is a good idea and in the best interest of safety, but it also has negative and unhealthy consequences such as causing children to stress their bodies though weight loss techniques.
