cut/chop blocking
Question
my son is a varsity defensive lineman and last week he played a team that cut and chop blocked him alnight how would you defend this type of blocking?

Thanks for your question. You use the terms cut and chop blocks. There are terms of art and chop block is a specific type of illegal block. One of the reasons a chop block is illegal is because it is dangerous and near impossible to defend against given the obvious delay and the double team dynamic of the block.
As far as defending against cut blocks - low blocks which are legal within the free blocking zone on the LOS can be defended by quick and accurate reading, quick feet or quick movement to engage the blocker and the ability to use his hands to push the blocker away or to the ground. The draw back is on pass plays your son will keep his hands down while pushing the cut blocker away to the side or the ground and not be able to have his hands up to block a pass over the line. When he uses his hands to ward off the cut block he needs to use the blockers momentum for best results.
