Afraid to get back in the game
Question
Mr. Kenward,
I injured my knee in the summer before my freshman year and haven't played since. I am a sophomore right now, and am seriously contemplating going back on the field as I love the game to a huge extent. However, I am afraid I will not be as good as I used to be. I am 6'3 180 lbs, but my weightroom stas are not impressive at all. I am also afraid that I could embarrass during spring practice. Should I concentrate on building up my physique before I get out on the field?
Answer
Hello Pete
First, you need to ask your doctor, perhaps physical therapist and your coach these questions. Don't get back out on the field unless it's medically safe for you.
I've helped athletes get back in the game after injuries in many different sports. What happens is they get worried about how they'll will do, and whether they'll be strong enough or safe enough. This results in some athletes NEVER going back because they believe they need to keep strengthening, and it's never enough.
What you need is to do what I said first and then get a WRITTEN plan for you to get back in the game. Look at it, read it, focus on it and if you want to play, follow it. And very importantly, ask questions and follow good professional advice to keep your knee stable.
Good luck and let me know how it goes.
