Tight End or something else,
Question
Dear coach,
I am soon starting out freshman football tryouts, and am thus far unsure of the position i should try out for. I have had a few mention tight end to me, but him still not completely sure. I'm 5'11" 160 lbs., I'm not slow but not fast, my 40 is around 5.5, 5.43 is my fastest. My squat max out is 265 and my bench is 135, distance jump of 14 ft. standing high jump of 38 inches. Just looking for some 3rd party insight,
much appreciated,
Taylor
p.s., are there exercises to increase speed? I've heard of Plyometrics, but was told that was purely for jump
Answer
Taylor, I think tight end would be a good place for you to play. Being really fast is not all that important at the tight end position. Being a good at blocking and catching is all that is really needed to be a solid tight end. It sounds like you are fairly strong already, this is good. But if you want to become faster you need to work on running lots of short and medium length sprints. Nothing loner than 40 yards. Focus on your first 3 steps of each sprint. Practice getting off the ball as fast a you can. Also become very flexible, make sure that you are becoming as flexible as possible. Also sprinting up hills is a good way to strengthen the legs and make them faster. GOOD LUCK COACH NOEL!!!
