Youth football spread offense
Question
Hello, I am the head coach and offensive coordinator for a youth team in California. I want to run a spread offense similiar to that of Oregons or West Virginias. The only problem is what blocking scheme can I use that will not confuse the boys. Do you think zone is too difficult? And how do I install. Thanks in advance
Answer
Personally I think that to install the zone blocking scheme for youth football would be to hard for that age group. But I do think that the offense could still be used by just modifying the blocking scheme. I would just use a man blocking scheme and run the offense. You should be facing a lot of 4 man fronts which makes it easy for your o-line to understand who to block on each play. Most blocking for the o-line in the spread is just occupying your man and taking him the direction he wants to go. There isn't much drive blocking needed. So I would go forward with a basic blocking plan. GOOD LUCK this season COACH NOEL!
