12 men on field
Question
My 10 year old son plays on a youth football league. There was a play at this weeks game that didn't seem right. The offensive team had 12 players on the field. As the extra player was leaving the field, the quarterback picked up the ball and started to walk towards the side line and said that it was not the correct ball, All of a sudden he ran down the side line and scored a touchdown. The refs looked as confused as the rest of us but gave them the points. Is this a legal play? Thank you for your help.
Answer
Yes it is. It is dirty and cheap way to score a touchdown but it is legal. It is called the wrong ball play. It has been mad famous from the Internet. Look on youtube.com and type in wrong ball play and you will see it multiple times. The center does not have to snap the ball through his legs. As long as everyone is set the center can hand the ball to the qb. As he is doing that the qb is yelling to the coach that this is the wrong ball as soon as he get out far enough he starts running. Very cheap, the other coach should feel really good about his unearned touchdown. Coach Noel!
