SOns playing time
Question
My son is a senior on the high school team. He has played football for about 10 years. He is 6' 160 lbs and is a wide receiver and safety. He is not starting but was second in line for safety. They put a younger inexperienced safety in the past 2 games and he did not fare well, my son went in for him for about 1/2 of the games. Yesterday, they removed the inexperienced player from starting and my son was excited assuming he would now be the starter. However, that was not the case, they took a linebacker and put him in that position. My son is down because he feels they never give him a chance. The compliment him on the practice field. He was on the punt return team but did make one mistake his first game so he is now not even on any special teams. My question is should I talk to the coach about his playing time? I don't care if he starts but feel he should at least be on a couple of the special teams. They have a senior playing on the the kick off who never played football before and my son has given his life to football on and off season. Would that be out of line?
Answer
As a coach I don't ever care if a parent comes and talks to me about their kid. As long as they do it in a professional way. I would try and talk to the coach in private and voice your concerns. If the coach is a straight shooter he will let you know what he is thinking. Most often, by you making that trip to see him in a pleasant way, he will think to put your son in the game more often. This will make for a much more enjoyable senior year for your son. I really hope it works out, COACH NOEL! PS Explain it in the same way you explained it to me!
