right sport?
Question
hi. im 14 years old and im having a tough year in football. im doing fine.. but my coaches yell all the time..
i play qb safety and kick/punt return.
im a motivator and i believe in being nice, finding common groung, not yelling/ embarrassing, and letting people save face. im a Christian and this is just how i=ve been raised.
my parents and I are wondering if football is right for me, because i dont take to the yelling very well. should i stop after this season and just play basketball and track?
or continue for the good of my team and try to tough this sport out?
thank you in advance for your answer.
Answer
Hello Dylan
A lot of coaches (in every sport) believe that the best way to motivate players is to yell at them, belittle them, embarrass them, scare them, all that negative stuff. Their belief is that this will motivate players to improve their performance and do their best. There are other coaches that understand that each player needs to be motivated differently to bring out the best inside of them - some with yelling, some with reason, some with a pat on the back. Those are the GREAT coaches.
When I went into the Navy at age 18 the drill instructors yelled at EVERYONE all of the time. But once you understand that it's like a game, you can let it slide off you like water off a ducks back.
What YOU get to decide is how much you like, or love, football (and/or other sports) and if the benefits of being in that environment are worth it to you.
Listen to your gut feeling, that's your best friend.
Good luck and let me know how it goes.
