Running Back techniques
Question
Dear Brian,
I am a 10 yr old running back named matthew. My interest in you is that I've heard you are a great offensive coach who knows a lot about different formations. My project is what are the best techniques to handle the ball as a running back. Do you have some resources I could use? I like this back in a week or so.
Answer
I wouldn't go that far, but thanks for the compliment!!
I have plenty of techiques and ideas to give you. As a 10 year old though I will give you some basics that I can add to if you would like.
First of all, tell yourself that you run with your eyes and not your feet. What I mean by that is be able to see where you need to go without relying on your speed. Great running backs instinctively see holes open, cut back against the grain in a split second time, etc. Trust your eyes, and your natural ability will take over.
Secondly, keep your eyes downfield whan accepting the handoff. By looking at the QB when getting the ball, this will slow you down, and not let you see an incoming defender or hole open up. I can't stress that enough.
Lastly, keep the ball tight to your body when running. Keeping your 4 points of pressure, the ball should be tight to your side, forearm, elbow and wrist at all times; even while making cuts!!! Many RB's lose the ball because they carry it like a loaf of bread while cutting and get hit and have no protection.
Also, never, ever say I will not "fumble" the ball; always tell yourself I will "secure" the ball. I believe in the power of positive thinking.
