Becoming a college football coach
Question
Hello, my name is patrick and i am a high schooler in Texas. Like many Texas teens, i would like to get into coaching and eventually work my way up to college coaching. What should i do to prepare myself and what suggestions would you have for me when i get to college?
Thanks!
Answer
Patrick, I worked as a Graduate Assistant at a Division II school in Michigan. Want to know how I did it? I walked in and asked. Big schools, like Texas, Tech, A & M, etc. probably have a LONG waiting list to be a GA. That doesn't mean you can't find a way to latch on somewhere.
Great story about Mike Shanahan when he was 21. He asked to be on staff at Oklahoma under Barry Switzer. He ended up working for free and doing laundry. He ended up winning two super bowls in his coaching career. It can be done.
