QB Arm injury
Question
QUESTION: Hi,
I am a rookie QB starting american for the first time in the UK. I have had a recurring tricep/elbow injury, its basically a numbing pain when i train its fine at first but just nearer the end of training. It means i am unable to throw any longer passes, after a while my arm just goes completey numb and im only able to throw 10-15 yards. Do you have any tips to what could be causing this?
Also i wanted to ask how i could improve the speed of my release, i am able to get a good spiral at times but theres no real pace on the throw, our starter QB has a fast release and tight spiral but he doesnt seem to be moving his arm any faster than me? Any tips?
Thanks
ANSWER: Rahil, I can't give you much help on the injury front. My wife is an athletic trainer, so people think I should know that stuff thought!! Ha.
Gaining a quick release is tough stuff. When you throw a football, you should be making a circle with your arm. On deep throws you will have a larger circle to get the ball downfield. On short throws you need to have a smaller circle. Have some toss you balls one after another and get throw the ball as quickly as you can before the next ball comes. It will teach you to get rid of it quick and work on having "small cirlces."

QUESTION: Thanks for your response! i will definately pay attention to the circles with my arm.
With regards to my second point, i am able to get rid of the ball fast, what i mean is theres no pace when i throw it, i can get a good spiral with no wobbles at all.. buts its never fast. For example i would throw a great spiral ball to my receiver on training but it wont get there fast enough, most of the time it gets tipped. I'm trying to get a really speedy ball out, i read somewhere its to do with a twitch of your shoulders on release but didnt understand this.
thanks!
Answer
Make sure your front shoulder is tucked into your front side. You don't want both arms flailing outward when you throw. My thinking then is to continue to workout, and expect to make strides. Two important things to leave you with: Perfect the short throws first (10 yards and in) and when practicing, throw hard every time(this builds arm strenght).
