Offensive Lineman Workout routines
Question
Hi, I'm an Offensive Guard, and I'm about 6' 2" 230 lbs. I have a couple questions. 1.)What are some exercises that I should do to increase my foot speed? I'm going to be getting a jump rope to work on that, and I'm doing Lacrosse which should also help tremendously but anything else you could think of? 2.)How could I get faster? 3.) What else would you recommend I do? I'm going to be involved in a heated battle for starting Left Guard on my Varsity team next year, I'm going to be battling a senior and I'll be a junior and my overall goal is to play in college. I'm willing to do anything for it. Also what type of diet would you suggest for gaining weight/muscle? I'm chowing down right now so I can gain weight and keep any muscle I still have because I have a broken collarbone. I should be back and lifting next week though. I guess I'm asking, what would you suggest I do to become a dominant lineman? I've started every game I've ever played, and I moved form Left Tackle to Right Guard last year and dominated. Thanks and I know that it's a ton of Q's so thanks a ton for any help!
Answer
First and foremost it is great to see the passion that you have for the game of football. That in itself should take you a long way.
It sounds to me like you are doing the right things. Have you discussed this with your coaches already? Have you asked your coaches for possible workouts for linemen in the program? Whenever I get a question about stuff like this, I try to be honest and give you a very honest answer. I think you should discuss your options with your coaches.
Jump rope, plyometric drills, leg workouts that work your hamstrings and gluteus maximus muscles are the best for speed. Try to cut out junk food and pop too. This is all stuff I am sure you have already heard.
Mentally believe that you will be the starting Guard the rest of your career, and college prospects will take care of itself.
If you do want some detailed drills, workouts, diets, etc. follow up and ask.
