complicated plays
Question
I was thrown into head coaching last year for our JR football team because no other parent wanted to do it. I enjoyed it so much I applied for the head coaching job this year and got it.I learned a lot about being the coach and how mentally and physically draining it was.We didn't win any games. I had 7 kids in the beginning and I went door to door and got 6 more to play so we would have a team. Six kids on the team never played before but even though we didn't win any games I watch these boys that never played before learn the game and become football players and that is why I applied for the coaching job again. This year I went to the high school head coach and got his plays thinking it would be easier for the kids to learn the high school plays at the JR level so when they move up to JV they will already know the plays and the transition will be easier for them. Do you think this was the right move? The plays don't seem to be complicated just a lot of different formations. My only concern is there won't be enough time to teach them all of the formations. We have 2 weeks condition and 2 weeks pads on before first game.

I am a fundamentals and foundation guy. At the Jr. level I believe keeping it simple and very basic and fun. I'd stay away from a lot of plays or a lot of complications.
At the Jr. level the kids need to learn, practice and have instilled into them the fundamentals of blocking, running, passing catching, tackling, etc. If I were in your shoes I'd work on about 6 basic plays then teach them to run it to the right, then left. That will give you 12 plays total [6 to the right 6 to the left].
Then to have fun practice some trick plays [i.e. reverse, double reverse, flee flicker, middle screen, statute of liberty etc]. Each week add a trick play to the basics and run a trick play or two. The kids have fun with. Get them excited about running it. Remember, winning is fun, it is nice but you can't win every game, the key is having a team that enjoys the game and is having fun playing it. You as a coach measure your success by the development of players and the soundness of their fundamentals.
