why are colored football eye shields not allowed in high
school leagues?
Answer
Colored eyeshield are not allowed for safety reasons and at the lobbying of the National Athletic Trainers Association and other Sports Medical Professional. When a player has a head or neck injury the helmet is not removed. The medical personnel must evaluate the downed player without removing the helmet and part of the evaluation is the assessment of the player's pupils. Colored eyeshield no mater how much or how little the tinting/color affects the light and pupillary response during such an assessment. Therefore to assure safety and proper assessment in such situations the Rules Committees have prohibited any such colored eye shield during competition.
