Long Snapping
Question
Hey Coach Mullins,
I'm 24 years old. I stand somewhere between 5'7" to 5'8", weigh 165 lbs. and am interested in long snapping for a semi-pro team. Do you have any idea what the rules are in that league for long snapping and if it's possible to get a scholarship to play college ball as a graduate student? I'v never played organized football but have discovered I'm capable of being able to long snap about 15 yards, though not quite but it'd be easier if I had someone watching my back and/or playing catch as if he was a punter. I'd say most of the time I can snap the ball at least 13 yards, other times 14, and 15 or more occasionally. I also feel I can snap the ball to an area that's fair enough for the would-be punter to catch it most of the time, yet I screw up a couple times each time I've been practicing outside.
Thanks you very much!
Yours Truly,
Adam
Answer
A true long snapper can consistantly snap 20-25 yards even though only 15 is normal....Sounds like you need a good bit more work. Measur off 18 yards towards a house, barn, tree, or shed...Place a tire on it & that's your target. When you can hit it 8 out of 10 times from that disatnce, then consider yourself a LS......Also strength comes from your hips & not your arms.....Google LS techniques & find some training there......
NCAA does not allow playing after you have received a bachelor's degree.
Great question.....Thanks, Andy
