QB Issues
Question
QUESTION: Hello coach.
It's me again, Elimar, from Brazil!
I have tried your hints and I got a lot better on my throws, they are starting to go on a regular trajectory and hardly going "pointed up". Thanks a lot!
Now I'm sending you a couple o videos of me throwing here in Santos beach (that's my little cousin playing WR hehe) so you could help me in throwing techniques. I'm feelingmy throws are slow and not having a tight spiral to make that "zip" so it can go further (I'm actually throwing for no more than 25yds which is really BAD).
Just to remind that I'm 20, 5'10" (yes I'm too small but as far as we're playing most amateur and there aren't so many "big guys" in the league it's ok I guess) and 170lbs. I've started playing QB about 4 months ago so I really think there is plenty of things to learn and train and get MUCH better!
Thanks again coach!

Answer
Hello,
I saw your videos. The first thing I noticed is that you need to get stronger. The second thing I noticed is that you are trying to throw with to much "style" in your throws. When you drop back, the ball should be more back and up even with your ear in a semi-cocked position, almost ready to throw. Your release has to be quicker, and you have to throw the ball with a meaning. You throw it as if you are afraid you are about to hurt the person you are throwing to.
When throwing, you need to work on just throwing at a stationary target and hitting him in the hands at the chest area. Back him up five yards after every 10 - 15 passes. Also when throwing pass routes, you have to understand that most pass routes are about timing. When throwing the five yard slant, the quarterback only takes 3 steps back, the third step is his plant foot (back foot), when that foot plants, the throwing arm should be in forward throwing motion. Deeper pass routes require a 5-step or 7-step drop, always being prepared to throw on the last step. This takes a lot of practice, no distractions. It also takes you working with a wide receiver that knows and understands how to run different pass routes.
