Offensive Linemen, Cut Blocks
Question
I play left guard for a high school in Florida. We use NFHS
football rules. If I am passblocking, is it legal for me to
cut linebackers who blitz across the line of scrimmage? To
specify, I mean to dive through the linebackers' shins to
trip him up if he blitzes from his normal position on a pass
play. I do not do this with the help of another lineman and
it isn't a chop block. But is it legal?
Answer
Dear Matt,
The answer is yes, it is legal. However, a cut block is usually used by running-backs not offensive linemen. The reason being is that once you hit the ground you are no longer able to block your opponent. The running-backs are usually not able to block a much lager linebacker so they use the cut block technique.
However, much lager offensive linemen should not have this problem. They should be able to block their man while only using a cut block as a last resource. And you never block your opponent in the back.
Good luck, your friend Louis
PS. A offensive linemen tip.
If you are having trouble reading a linebacker blitz or picking it up, you may want to take a deeper drop than usually. Once the pass pocket is set, take one or two feet deeper drop than the rest of the offensive linemen so that you can see any blitzes in front of you. And so that you may have a better angle to block your opponents.
