NEW FOOTBALL COACH

Question
QUESTION: Hello,

I want to coach football. It's I all I've ever thought about since I was 12 years old. I am currnetly in college. I played foortball all through high school. I love football. I watch football film all the time. I have dozens of books on football offenses and formations. I am constantly watching videos of football online and I would love to be an offensive coordinator.

The only problem is that I have no idea how to get an internship. I would love to have some experience coaching before I graduate from college. Are there any websites to find internships coaching?

My second question is about film. Do you know of any site or place where I can find old game film. I love watching film of games, I love to learn more about football. I go to Liberty University and I would love to buy some film to watch and learn.

Thankyou for your time.

Matt

ANSWER: Dear Matt,
Let me be the first one to welcome you to our club. It is always nice to meet a new football coach. Playing football is great. The only thing that is almost as good as playing football, is coaching football. Nevertheless, it does have its ups and downs. I am not trying to discourage you I am just trying to give you the facts. Coaching football is not as easy as it looks. There is a lot more to coaching than meets the eyes.

First,
you want to do is take advantage of the fact that you are attending college. You need to have a talk with the head football coach (at your college) and tell him what you just told me. Tell him that you would like to volunteer to help in any way you can. It does not matter what he has you doing, even if it is getting coffee for the other football coaches. A college letter of recommendation looks great on a resume and it will open a lot of doors for you.

The letter is worth its weight in gold. Some athletic directors do not look past the name of the college or ask any follow up question concerning your role at the school. And who knows, you might even land a full time coaching job at your college.

Second,
You should read "Play Football the NFL Way" by Tom Bass. You do not have to read the whole book just the chapter that covers the position you would like to coach. It is not as hard as it sounds. When or if your college job does not work out for you, just move on to the next step.

Third, call the nearest High school and ask to talk to the head football coach. Tell him you would like to coach football and that you are willing to do it for free (only if he has no paying jobs opened). Most football coaches are happy to have the additional support.

If the high school has no openings, try another high school or try the Pee wee football program. All you have to do is get your foot in the door, this will open all kinds of opportunities for you in the future. Where ever you coach football be sure to get as many letters of recommendation, from the football coach, as you can.

Let me know how things work out for you. And if you need any more help.

Your friend, Coach Louis.
