what position should i play

Question
I am 6'0 217 pounds and i love football to death and i have been playing since i was 8 years old. I'm only 15 and im about to play junior higschool foot ball. I can bench press 115 and i can run a 40 yrd dash in 5.9 secs i can catch really about anything  in any situation but i can cover very well on zone not that well on man to man only if they aer slower than or a little faster. So basically i need to know what position fits me the most TE or LB. I really want to go pro thats me biggest dream and i will do whatever it takes to make it reality.

Answer
Honestly, you should play the position that best helps the team.  If you play a position other than the one you are hoping to play, settle into the role of being a team player.  On day one when they ask you what position you want to play it is best to tell them that you want to do whatever it takes to help the team.  A team player will gain the support of his coaches and be more likely to be recommended to recruiters.

At your current level of football you should be concentrating on making yourself sound at blocking and tackling.  Fundamentals are the most important thing right now.

At your age and judging by your current height, weight, and 40 yard dash time you are most likely going to be pushed toward being an offensive linemen.  If you are asked to play line, be the best lineman you can be.  In time as you work on increasing your speed you can make it a goal to become a tight end and linebacker in high school.  Unfortunately, the 40 yard dash usually dictates what position you will play.  It is kind of funny as Hall of Fame linebacker Dick Butkus probably had one of the slowest 40 yard dash times in NFL history.

Less than 1% of high school seniors nationwide will play football in college (at any level).  This means in order to live the dream you are going to have to make football a full-time job.  You will have to give up quite a bit in order to make it a reality.  That means no girlfriend that tries to monopolize your time; not working too many hours at a part-time job; very little of a social life.  If you really want this you are going to have to lift four times per week (split routine) and run at least the same number of days (both short and long distances).  You are going to have improve on your 40 yard dash time significantly.  In order to even get looked at by the big schools at the positions you mention, you will need to run in the 4.7 second range.  Your bench press (another terrible indicator of football ability) will not be judged on how much you can lift, but how many times you can press 225 pounds.  A high school player entering their freshman year at a major college at the positions you mention would be bench pressing the aforementioned weight 20+ times.

The thing that will truly separate two players more than anything is grades.  For every 6'3" 240 lb. linebacker running a 4.6 40-yard dash, there is an identical one with higher SAT scores and higher grades.  Guess who gets the scholarship?

Judging by your age and grade level it appears you will be older than your teammates in high school.  Be sure to find out your specific state's age cutoff for athletes.  In most states if you turn 19 before the beginning of school your senior year you will be ineligible to play.  Waivers are given under special circumstances so you must be prepared well ahead of time.  I have seen waivers given to players with learning disabilities, those from single-parent households and to others considered to be hardship cases.

If you are willing to work for it you can make it happen.  NFL great Barry Sanders was told by coaches that he should not even bother coming out for football.  After quieting the naysayers he was told that he would not play in college.  In college he was told he would probably not play much.  After winning the Heisman Trophy he was told he could not make it in the NFL.

Can you imagine if he had listened to everyone that told him that he could not do it?
