Question
Hey I am a quarterback 6 ft. and I would like to know good arm strengthening exercises and how to throw farther. Also, what are good summer camps to go to help your motions and ability to throw if you can answer any of these questions i thank you.
Answer
There are definitely some good exercises you can do to strengthen the arm. However, in regards to throwing a football, well it takes a bit more than arm strength. To develop pinpoint accuracy and to throw the long bomb you are going to need to work on your throwing mechanics. As far as a lifting regiment to strengthen your arm it not truly necessary. The normal auxiliary lifts such as curls, triceps extensions, pull-downs... they should suffice. More important are the basic core lifts which are the squat, dead lift, and clean. These are the three most important lifts for a football player. Football strength is derived from the areas just below the chest to just above the knees. Master these lifts and you will be throwing the ball further naturally without trying too hard. Notice that when a baseball player throws a baseball they are not using just their arm. The arm is more of a guidance system. You should also work your bodies core on a stability ball. You can do many of your auxiliary lifts on the stability ball all while strengthening your core. It becomes a two for one deal. Balance can easily be worked into your auxiliary lifts as well. Try doing biceps curls while standing on one foot.
As far as throwing a ball a greater distance you must not try to throw the ball. What do I mean? Well, a relaxed throwing motion done with proper technique should help you throw the deep one with ease. I often tell my players to let the ball throw itself. You may notice that when you try and throw the ball that it often falls to the ground well before the target and it usually doesn't look very pretty. Relax, take a breath and let it rip.
As far as camps, well I would try and find something with Chris Johnston. If you have heard of him I would be surprised. When you first see him he is not a physically dominant presence. Although a great athlete, Chris needed to develop his mechanics in order to be a good quarterback. He is in my opinion the best in the business today as he is simply not living off a well-known name, he is living off of results. http://www.completeqb.com/
