Direct snaps

Question
Can a big strong quarterback be used to make effective blocks in a direct snap to RB configuration? I know that Coaches don't want to chance injuring their quarterback but if your playing a team like LSU who stops the run isn't it feasable to use a big QB on some trick plays to give added blocking to free up RB's.

Thank you for taking my question

Answer
Hello Gerald,

Although it seems feasable, the truth is that even big strong quarterbacks are not use to that kind of contact. The "low end" definitely out weighs the "high end" in that scenario. You have to be able to get your passing game going against teams who stop the run that well. The passing game will make the defense play honest and make the linebackers respect the passing lanes. That will then open up more running lanes for the running game. When using the quarterback to block, you run a high risk of getting him hurt. Now, your running game don't work and your quarterback is hurt so your passing game will probably struggle to. Now you have jeopardized the health of your quarterback and your season. Other adjustments have to be made. Now this is just my opinion, and it comes from my experiences in this situation as a player and a coach. Against a team that stops the run, the QB, can't be used in run instances. Understand that, he may get in the way on a play or two, but that in no way makes up for the other 50+ plays in a game. You still have to figure out a way to counter attack that run stopping defense.

Thanks,
Coach Anderson
