Tinted Goggles

Question
Hi, I looked my question up and found an answer but it was from 2007. So I was wondering about an update. My child is 8 years old and plays football in Huntington Beach California for Pop Warner football. The season is almost over but they are now telling me my son can not play with his tinted prescription sports goggles! They are telling me to have him wear his regular glasses, which I feel is much more dangerous! I have looked for a rule but as you stated back in 07 that there is no rule in regards to tinted goggles, only a face shield. Can you please let me know what the official rule is?
Thank you,

Jodi

Answer
Jodi,

You are absolutely correct about the rule that a VISOR cannot be tinted.  However the officials do have leeway when and how they apply the rule.  The rule itself was put into place so that a trainer, or EMT, can check for dilated pupils, often the first sign of a concussion.  A doctor's note should be suffice to allow your son to wear the shaded goggles for medical purposes.  Otherwise this is not really something you can appeal.

I have seen players wear their glasses and play and have not seen anything go wrong.  Personally I would not recommend it.  Glass next to an eyeball does not make sense to me.  When I first started playing football I did not wear my glasses, but soon found it necessary to get contact lenses after the first week.

I wish you all the best and hope your son is allowed to finish out the season being able to wear his goggles.

Jeff
