Offensive Linemen Reaction
Question
Hello Coach! My name is Elimar and I1m trying to be an Offensive Coordinator here in Brazil. I'm a football fanatic and I like the X and O's a lot. I love to study the game and every detail of it.
Today at our practice I noticed that my Offensive Linemen aren't exploding on the snap count. Sometimes they wait for the Center to move to start their movement, or even worse, they wait for the Defensive Lineman to move! This is ruining some of our plays, specially running plays, because we lose the advantage of the snap count and those few miliseconds that make the difference in the end. I've tried to make them listen to the count, to make them not wait for the defense but I had little progress. I'm pretty sure those guys can be a dominant OL but if they keep losing time to block they'll be destroyed on every play.
So...ss there any drill or exercise that we can do to make this improve? I really think that right now this is the area of most need in my offense...it will be a huuuge help!
Thank you very much!
Elimar
Answer
Dear Elimar,
Here are few drills that will help the linemen get on track.
1. (Diving Drill) teaches the linemen to make contact fast.
Have the linemen assume their normal three or four point stance, back straight, and heads up. Have the quarterback or one of the coaches stand in front, about five yards away, where the linemen can see him, while facing each other. Have the quarterback yell Set! Go!
When the linemen hear the word 揋o? they are to fire out as far as they can straight ahead and on to their guts. The goal here is to come as close to the five yard line marker as possible. If they are in their proper stance they should be able to fire-out in a straight line without any difficulties if not, they need to make adjustments to their stance before trying again.
This drill will teach the linemen to stay low, make contact with their opponents, and get a jump on the defensive linemen. I do not want the linemen to worry about which foot to step with or anything else I just want them to make contact with the opposing player. Once they have made contact, they can make whatever adjustments that need be to execute the proper block. What is important here is to stay low and to make contact with the opposition as soon as possible.
2. (Clap Drill) teaches the linemen to come off the line of scrimmage together. Have the linemen assume a two point stance.
Knees flexed, back straight, head up, and hands one foot apart. The quarterback yells out Go! Everybody claps their hands. The goal is for everybody to clap their hands in unison. However, that is not going to happen at first. When you first try it everybody is going to be all over the place. Give it a few minutes everyday and you will see the improvement.
3. (Race Drill) teaches the linemen to come off the line of scrimmage quickly. Have the linemen assume their normal three or four point stance, back straight, and heads up. Have the quarterback or a coach stand in front, about five yards away, where the linemen can see him. The quarterback yells out Go! The race is on! Yell out the winners of each group. This will motivate the other to work harder to win the next time.
Let me know if I can be of anymore help?
Good luck,
Louis
