Film break down
Question
I am a new OC for a local high school freshman team. Obviously, this requires breaking down film, both of our team and the opponents. I have watched film myself before but never done detailed breakdowns. Being the OC I feel like I should concentrate on what the upcoming opponent's Defense is doing, but I am not very good at that beyond identifying tendencies and basic formations. I am Much better at breaking down the offensive side of the ball for both teams, since I have a far better grasp on each position. As an OC which side of the ball should I concentrate on while watching film? Stick with what I know and let the DC tell me about their Defense or do my best with what I can see on the Defensive side?
Answer
Hello Rob,
Congratulations on the OC position! I say this to players, coaches and just people in general; There is nothing wrong with "not knowing, there is something wrong with "not being willing to learn". Break down as much of it as you can. Then ask the DC, for a little help at what you are looking at. It is going to be required of you anyway. If you inspire to be a head coach, you will need to at least be able to understand the breaking down of all three aspects of the ball; offense, defense and special teams. I would rather my OC ask for help now, instead of me just assuming he knows. Then find out during practice and or a game the he doesn't.
