Bowling with a cracked ball
Question
Is it legal to use a ball with an eighth of an inch crack in it. The crack encompasses the entire ball. I believe that it has to make the ball larger in circumference. I asked our league about it before bowling against the guy and no rules could be found. since it has cracked the guy has bowled well over 100 pins above average and tonight he was 147 over. Not sure if it gives him an advantage but I would just like to know. The league president said no rules have been found to dissallow the ball and he gets asked the same thing by different people every week, so it has been going on a while I guess. Just wondering.
Answer
Dennis,
There is a size requirement (circumference) in the specifications section of the USBC rules.
Suggest to the bowling center what's happening. The ball could do damage to the lanes. The crack shouldn't provide any benefit, but when the ball separates in the pinsetter some real damage to the equipment could occur.
Good luck with the problem. Thanks for the question.
