thumb release
Question
QUESTION: Hi Chip, I have always had an occasional problem with my thumb sticking at release. Do you think it's because I'm putting too much pressure by squeezing? Should I have my fingers and thumb completely relaxed during the swing? I use a full fingertip grip. Thanks for the help!
ANSWER: Do you use inserts and slugs?
If it is only occasional, I would think it is a technique issue and not a fit issue. You may be getting quick with your foot speed and having to pull the ball in the downswing to correct the timing and that will make you squeeze the ball. If you try to over hit the ball, or really try to make it hook, that can cause squeezing as well. It could also be that your hand is swelling a little, or if you use tape, you may need to take a piece out quicker.
Do you notice if you stick in similar circumstances?

QUESTION: Chip, I use only fingertip inserts, no thumb slug. I don't think it's a fitting issue because the thumb doesn't feel exceptionally tight and doesn't stick all the time. Should my entire hand be relaxed until release and delivery? Thanks!
Anthony
Answer
You might want to try a thumb slug, but not the vinyl ones. By using a urethane slug, you can keep your thumb hole tighter but still get out of the ball cleanly.
by relaxing the thumb and not squeezing, you will be able to have a freer swing and produce better ball roll. Experiment with tape to find the tightest thumb hole you can and still release the ball. It will take some getting used to though.
Good luck,
Chip
